An IEP Document Review Strategy Session is a focused legal strategy meeting that includes attorney review of specific documents before the session. During the case analysis, our intake specialist will determine your purpose for the document review and inform you of what documents should be provided for review.
This service is designed for parents who want more than a general strategy conversation. The attorney reviews those specific documents before the session so the discussion can focus on what the records show, what may be missing, what concerns should be raised, and what steps may make sense next.
After the session, you receive a written Action Plan with comments on the documents, recommended next steps, questions to ask, and strategies for moving forward.
The goal is simple: help you understand the IEP documents before you make decisions that affect your child’s education.
How is this different from a regular Strategy Session?
A regular Strategy Session focuses on your concerns, your goals, and a general review of the situation.
An IEP Document Review Strategy Session includes attorney review of specific documents before the meeting. This allows the attorney to come into the session with a stronger understanding of the written record and provide more document-specific guidance.
Because this service includes attorney review time before the session, the flat fee is higher than a standard Strategy Session.

What you receive after the Document Review Strategy Session
After the Document Review Strategy Session, you receive a written Action Plan.
Your Action Plan will include key concerns identified from the documents and discussion, recommended next steps, questions to ask the school team, issues to raise, meeting preparation strategies, and possible requests to make at the next IEP meeting.
The Action Plan is designed to give you direction after the conversation ends, so you are not left trying to remember everything discussed.
If more legal support is needed
Some families only need a Document Review Strategy Session and written Action Plan. Others may need additional representation.
If your family decides to move forward and Shefter Law agrees to provide representation, for the next IEP meeting, we will review all documents, have a premeeting to discuss your desires and what the documents show, attend the meeting with you, advocate for your child, make legal arguments with data to support your requests, respond to any other issues that arise at the meeting and have a post meeting to discuss next steps.

If your matter is a fit, the next step may be a Document Review Strategy Session.
Step 2: Submit the core documents
If a Document Review Strategy Session is the right next step, our intake team will explain what documents are needed and how to submit them.
Step 3: Attorney document review
Before the session, the attorney reviews the documents to identify key concerns, missing information, possible issues, and questions to discuss.
Step 4: Strategy Session
During the Strategy Session, we discuss the documents, your concerns, the school’s position, possible next steps, and strategies for moving forward.
Step 5: Written Action Plan
After the session, you receive a written Action Plan with comments on the documents, recommended next steps, questions to ask, and strategies for moving forward.

No. A Document Review Strategy Session is a focused service that includes attorney review of specific documents, a meeting with the attorney, and a written Action Plan.
Full representation involves an engagement agreement and includes additional services such as meeting attendance, mediation, complaint preparation, or due process support when appropriate.
How is this different from a regular Strategy Session?

A Document Review Strategy Session includes attorney review of specific documents before the session. Because it includes additional attorney review time, the fee is higher than a standard Strategy Session.
What documents are reviewed?
Documents included in the review depend on the purpose of the review.
If the purpose is to prepare you for a meeting, it will include review of the documents the school sent you that will be reviewed at the meeting. This could be a draft IEP, evaluation reports and/or progress reports.
If the purpose is to determine whether your child’s IEP includes all the necessary supports and services, it will include your child’s current IEP and most recent evaluations.
If the purpose is for another reason, our intake specialist will talk through the purpose and determine what documents will be reviewed.
If other records appear important during the Strategy Session, we can discuss whether additional legal support or a different service may be appropriate.
Do I need this if I already have an IEP meeting scheduled?
Possibly. If you are unsure what to ask for, what the documents mean, or whether the school’s proposal is appropriate, a Document Review Strategy Session can help you prepare for the meeting.
Can this help with a draft IEP?
Yes. A draft IEP is one of the most common reasons parents request a Document Review Strategy Session. We identify issues with the IEP, where the IEP does not match the evaluation reports and make suggested edits.
Can this help with evaluations?
Yes. We review the most recent evaluations and help you understand what the evaluations mean, discuss whether you feel they are a true reflection of your child, identify what questions to ask, and determine whether additional evaluation may need to be requested.
Will I receive something in writing?
