What is an IEP/504 Strategy Session?
An IEP/504 Strategy Session is a focused legal strategy meeting designed to help parents understand what is happening, what may be missing, and what next steps should be taken.
During the session, an attorney will review your concerns, identify key issues, and explain your options. After the session, you receive a written Action Plan with recommended next steps, questions to ask, decisions you will need to make and strategies for moving forward.
The goal is simple: help you stop guessing and move forward with clarity.
Who is this service for?
A Strategy Session may be a good fit if:
- Your child has an IEP or 504 Plan, but it does not seem to be working.
- The school says your child is making progress, but you disagree.

The IEP is not helping
Your child may have services on paper but still be falling behind, refusing school, struggling emotionally, or failing to make meaningful progress. We will discuss options and possible remedies depending on your child’s specific needs and your desires.
The 504 Plan is too weak
A 504 Plan may provide accommodations, but some children need more than accommodations. If your child needs specialized instruction, related services, behavior support, or a different level of intervention, we can help you understand how to request these additions.
The school is denying evaluations
If the school refuses to evaluate your child or says your child will not qualify, parents should understand their rights before accepting no for an answer.

The Action Plan is designed to give you direction after the conversation ends, so you are not left trying to remember everything discussed.
If more legal support is needed
Some families only need a Strategy Session and written Action Plan. Others may need additional representation.
If more support is desired, the attorney will discuss what additional services are available depending on your specific situation. The right level of support depends on your child’s needs, the school issues, your desired outcomes and what path you choose.
How the process works
Step 1: Start with a Free Case Analysis call
You start with a Free Case Analysis. During the Case Analysis, our intake team will ask specific questions to learn the basic facts and what the current issues are. The specialist will then determine whether Shefter Law may be able to help.
The Case Analysis is a screening step. It is not a legal advice session and does not create an attorney-client relationship.
If your matter is a fit, the next step may be a Strategy Session.
Step 2: Schedule the Strategy Session
During the Strategy Session, we review your concerns, identify key issues, discuss your desired outcomes and explain your options.
Step 3: written Action Plan
After the session, you receive a written Action Plan with recommended next steps, questions to ask, decisions you will need to make and strategies for moving forward.

The best time to schedule a Strategy Session is before you agree to something you do not understand.
