Parenting is hard, and expensive. Your plate is already full running from appointment to appointment, working, managing a household and advocating for your child. You don’t have the time to look for “free” money, even though you know there is a need. Sometimes insurance doesn’t cover everything. That’s where grant programs step in—they can bridge the gap so your child can access helpful resources without the full financial burden.
What kinds of grants are available
On the Autism Speaks website, there is a detailed list of “Autism grants for families” provided by various national organizations. Some examples include:
- Ability Found: Helps people with disabilities get equipment like adapted strollers or toileting supports.
- Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation (ASDF): Offers summer scholarship programs, social-skills camps, and “iPads for Kids.”
- MyGOAL Inc.: Provides need-based grants for children under 18 with autism for treatments, educational needs, or enrichment opportunities.
And many others that cover therapies, assistive tech, communication devices, and more.
How parents can make the most of these opportunities
- Start by visiting the Autism Speaks grants list and identifying grants that apply to your child’s age and needs.
- Read eligibility criteria carefully. Look for what the funding can and cannot cover.
- Gather your documentation. This may include medical records, therapist letters, and proof of income.
- Apply early. Deadlines can be competitive, and funds are limited.
- Use the grant properly. Stick to the intended purpose, such as communication tools or therapy sessions.
- Explore multiple options. Consider applying to more than one grant to meet various needs.
- Track how funds are used and be ready to report outcomes if requested.
