Protecting Your Child’s Right To A Fair and Full Education In A Safe Environment

Parents of Children with Special Needs have a ton of demands on their
time and energy. Learning the complexities of how to get your child’s
school to meet his or her unique needs is just one more thing you do
not need on your plate. As a former Special Education teacher, I am
uniquely able to mix Education and the Law to help take the stress out
of the IEP or 504 process. Although we are a law firm, we only provide
advocacy services in Virginia. We do not provide legal advice. We will offer thoughts on a position and general information to help clarify issues, explore options, and form a plan of action.

There is a broad range of services and placements a parent has to learn
about in order to get a school plan in place.

Getting the school to evaluate your child — or to pay for an independent educational evaluation when you disagree with the results — can be a challenge. Ensuring that your child is found eligible for Special Education Services, or a 504 plan, by the school team can be painful and tedious. And even when your child has been found eligible, determining the right mix of services and accommodations is daunting. I can help you have a Stress-Free IEP™ experience.

While special education laws protect the rights of children with
varying levels of disability to receive an appropriate education,
other laws such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) cast a wider net protecting your differently abled child from discrimination and harassment. While we cannot provide specific legal advice, we can provide a general opinion and discuss all options.

No impersonal law firm. Just a real advocate, special educator, and Mom. Let’s Talk (301) 605-7303

Together with my team here at Shefter Law, we advocate for students with disabilities as well as students who do not yet identify as having a
disability from abuse, neglect, harassment and discrimination. We will
communicate and negotiate with schools and school districts to protect your child’s rights and obtain the services and accommodations to which your child may be entitled.

How We Work Together To Make the IEP or 504 Process Work For Your Family In Arlington County, VA

I will gently guide your family through the complicated school
processes. Before each step, we will have a full discussion of the
options and put a roadmap in place to navigate the different roads
ahead as the school puts up roadblocks. This will help you better
understand how we will reach your end goal with as little stress as
possible.
